Oklahoma State University ChE students embark on a field trip to Zeeco and Fabsco

A group of Oklahoma State University chemical engineering students recently went on an educational field trip to Zeeco, a global leader in combustion and environmental solutions in Tulsa, and Fabsco, a leading designer and manufacturer of shell and tube heat exchangers in Sapulpa, Oklahoma.

Both visits, organized by OSU chemical engineering professors Dr. Clint Aichele and Dr. Joshua Ramsey, aimed to provide students with real-world insights into the industry and expose them to cutting-edge technologies and practices.

Starting the day at Fabsco, the students saw firsthand the intricate process of designing and manufacturing shell and tube heat exchangers. The tour with Scott Lewis, chief operating officer, provided valuable insights into the practical applications of their studies and highlighted the importance of precision and innovation in chemical engineering.

Following the tour, Fabsco provided lunch for the students. Inspired by the engineers' expertise, they were eager to see what was in store for them at the next site visit with Zeeco.

Greeted by OSU alumni and engineers, the students were first given an introductory presentation on the company and its history, followed by a Q&A session. Afterward, they had the opportunity to explore research, test demonstrations, and tour the fabrication facilities.

Overall, both site visits with professional engineers were a resounding success. The students could see how the concepts they learned in class are applied in the industry, leaving them motivated and better equipped to pursue their careers. It was an invaluable experience that enhanced their understanding and prepared them for their future.

Students were particularly impressed by the companies' commitment to innovation and sustainability.

"The students really enjoyed this opportunity, as did I," Aichele said.

The School of Chemical Engineering paid travel expenses for the field trip through generous gifts given by donors to support students.
