Sen. Fontana Announces Grants to Local Schools

Allegheny County - August 14, 2024 - Today, Sen. Wayne Fontana announced that several schools in the 42nd Senatorial District will receive federal grants totaling over $175,000 to make nutritional snacks available to students.

"Ensuring our students can access fresh and healthy food while at school provides a two-fold benefit," Fontana said. "Not only are kids eating nutritious snacks that will help them focus and learn during class, but they are also learning healthy eating habits that will stay with them well past the dismissal bell."

Funded through the federal Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, schools are reimbursed for the costs of making free, fresh fruits and vegetables available to students. These nutritional snacks are not part of the lunch or breakfast meal.
