GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Newton County

Newton County, GA (September 7, 2024) - At the request of the Newton County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) on September 7, 2024, the GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Newton County, Georgia. Ivan Felton, age 20, of Covington, GA, was shot and killed in the incident. No deputies were injured in this incident.

The preliminary information indicates that on September 7, 2024, at about 2:00 p.m., NCSO deputies were dispatched to the Salem Glen Apartments in reference to a person shot. When deputies arrived, they met with an off-duty Rockdale County Sheriff's Office deputy who had shot Felton. Moments before the off-duty Rockdale County deputy shot Felton, multiple witnesses saw Felton shooting at a Salem Glen Apartments resident. The off-duty deputy witnessed Felton chasing the resident, and the deputy shot Felton, fatally wounding him. Fenton was pronounced dead at the scene.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Newton County District Attorney's Office (Alcovy Judicial Circuit) for review.
