City of Sacramento to unveil ‘Hanami’ public art at this waterfront park Oct. 23

The City of Sacramento's Office of Arts and Culture invites the public to celebrate the unveiling of Hanami, a new public art installation, on Wednesday, Oct. 23 from 5:30-7 p.m. at Robert T. Matsui Waterfront Park (450 Jibboom Street).

This free event offers the community an opportunity to engage with the artists behind the project and enjoy an evening of art and culture. Registration is required for attendance.

The installation, created by local artists Jennifer Madden and Jeffrey Reed of Reed + Madden Design, draws inspiration from the Japanese tradition of hanami, which emphasizes the beauty of cherry blossoms and the tranquility of their fleeting bloom.

"This piece not only highlights the beauty of nature but also serves as a powerful reminder of the fleeting moments we share as a community," said Donald Gensler, Art in Public Places Manager. "Hanami is a celebration of both the natural and cultural heritage of Sacramento, inviting residents and visitors alike to reflect and connect."

The event will feature a taiko drum performance, remarks from local leaders and a presentation by the artists. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the installation's inspiration and design.

The Hanami Line at Robert T. Matsui Waterfront Park features "Pink Flair" cherry blossom trees, public art, native landscaping, and ample seating areas, and is designed as a year-round community gathering space and an annual venue for cherry blossom festivals.

The park is a collaborative effort, funded through the Sacramento Tree Foundation, the City of Sacramento, Caltrans Clean California Grant, UC Davis Health, and various philanthropic contributions.
