October 1, 2024

Stanford University Associate professor of Psychology Steven O. Roberts will present "Talking to Children About Racism: The Psychology Behind What Parents Do and (Should) Say" from 5-6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7 in Fraser Hall 102 and via Zoom as part of WWU's Fraser Lecture Series.

Racism significantly impacts children's worldviews, with parents playing a vital role in shaping their understanding.

In this discussion, Stanford University Associate professor of Psychology Steven O. Roberts will present data highlighting three key points:

1) Black and White parents differ in race-related conversations with their children.

2) These differences greatly influence children's understanding of race and racism.

3) With guidance, parents can effectively discuss racism with their children.

Roberts is the former director of Academic Programs at Stanford's Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity. Dr. Roberts's research on the impact of racism within the scientific community and broader society has earned him an international reputation as well as numerous awards.

The event is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is requested; you can register here.
