NOPD Announces Preliminary Crime Statistics for July 21-27, 2024

The following is a weekly report of citywide crime statistics compiled by the NOPD Analytics Unit for the period of July 21-27, 2024.

Notable arrests made

During the listed week, the NOPD also made the following notable arrest(s):

• On July 25, the NOPD and the U.S. Marshals Task Force arrested Brandon Laurant (black male, DOB: 04-14-1984) on multiple charges following a standoff incident that occurred in the 1800 block of Washington Avenue. Laurant was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center on an attempted murder charge out of Jefferson Parish, as well as on additional charges of flight from an officer, aggravated criminal damage to property and theft and on felony drug and weapons violations.
• On July 22, the NOPD arrested Alton F. Whittey (black male, DOB: 08-31-1991) in the investigation of a homicide that occurred on July 17, 2024, in the 1400 block of North Claiborne Avenue. Whittey was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center on one count of second-degree murder.

Gun arrests (arrests made under LA RS 14:95 and sub-items)

Year to date, the NOPD has made 321 arrests for illegal possession of a firearm. This is a 39-percent decrease compared to 525 arrests made during the same period in 2023.
