Scripps News/Ipsos poll reveals a majority of Americans support mass deportation of undocumented immigrants

ATLANTA - A majority of Americans support the mass deportation of undocumented immigrants, according to a new Scripps News/Ipsos survey, including 25% of self-identified Democrats. The poll also found a majority are concerned that non-citizen voting will affect results of the 2024 election. Asked to choose who would do a better job handling immigrants, 44% of Americans selected President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris (34%).

Immigration and inflation were the top issues among voters, according to the national poll conducted after last week's presidential debate. Among registered voters, 71% said they worry that officials won't accept the results of the election and 69% are concerned about foreign interference in the democratic process.

Key findings:

• A larger percentage of voters had a more favorable opinion of Harris (45%) than Trump (38%).
• A majority of Republicans (86%) support mass deportations, as do a quarter of Democrats (25%). Overall, 54% of voters support the policy proposal, while 42% oppose it.
• More Republicans are also concerned about non-citizens voting illegally (86%). Independents were also far more likely (46%) than Democrats (25%) to feel the same.
• A third of Americans view securing the U.S.-Mexico border as the country's top immigration priority.
• An overwhelming majority, including 55% of Democrats, support restrictions on asylum.
• Voters couldn't agree on Harris' role on immigration policy, with 17% saying they believe she is responsible for securing the U.S.-Mexico border and 20% unsure.

The Scripps News/Ipsos poll was conducted by Ipsos from Sept. 13 to Sept. 15, using the probability-based KnowledgePanel®. This poll is based on a nationally representative probability sample of 1,027 adults age 18 or older. The margin of error is +/- 3.6 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.

The survey was conducted using KnowledgePanel, the largest and most well-established online probability-based panel that is representative of the adult U.S. population.
