Seth Wilson has always been fascinated with engineering processes and the logistics of how things operate. Growing up, he dreamed of being a pilot and, eventually, an astronaut.
That dream is what led the Sand Creek, Michigan native to The University of Toledo.
CELEBRATING SUCCESS: UToledo recognizes the Class of 2024 with a series of stories featuring students receiving their degrees at fall commencement.
"While researching universities, The University of Toledo was a top choice because it had an ABET-rated engineering program, which is highly accredited and well-respected in the engineering field," Wilson said. "That, in conjunction with the co-op program offered, was a top sell for me.
"I ultimately decided on civil engineering due to its versatile opportunities in the engineering field."
Wilson did two of his integrated co-ops at Tetra Tech, and his third with Messer Construction.
"Through this I had many great experiences with the co-op program, from transportation engineering to construction engineering and management, including the opportunity to live in Nashville for a semester while working for Messer Construction on the campus of Vanderbilt University," he said. "I had a great working relationship with both my boss and my coworkers there."
Throughout Wilson's undergraduate career, he continued to work part time while being a full-time engineering student.
"I am proud of this work ethic because it has contributed to high expectations of myself and the determination to reach my goals, regardless of my circumstances," he said. "I am also very thankful for the leadership skills gained in the engineering program at UToledo. The management experience through my co-ops, as well as working on group projects and as being a member of Chi Epsilon fraternity have all contributed to, and added to, my personal growth as a leader."
Following his Dec. 14 graduation, Seth Wilson will join the U.S. Navy as a student naval aviator through the Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program.
This drive to be a leader, combined with the lingering desire to fly, lead Wilson to the decision to pursue a career as a pilot. In August, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, after securing a contract as a student naval aviator through the Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program (BDCP).
"It is truly a great program and gives me a spot in the U.S. Navy as an officer upon graduation, and full pay and benefits throughout my time in the program," Wilson said. "Upon completion of my engineering degree this December, I will be leaving to begin my career as an officer in the Navy and working to become a naval aviator."
Dr. Defne Apul, professor and chair of the Civil Engineering Department, said it's been a pleasure to get to know Wilson as an officer in Chi Epsilon and through his work on augmented reality in the senior design project.
"With his leadership and practical approach to problem solving I have no doubt he will continue to thrive as an officer in the Navy," Apul said.
Dr. Youngwoo Seo, a professor in civil engineering, added: "Seth Wilson is a dedicated civil engineering student whose drive for excellence and passion for engineering have instilled in him the determination to reach his goals."
With his time as a Rocket student ending soon, Wilson said he is looking forward to the next chapter as he brings his lifelong dream to life.
"I am excited to begin my career by serving our country in the U.S. Navy," he said. "I believe this experience is a great opportunity to combine the technical skills I gained in the civil engineering program with my lifelong dream of becoming a pilot."
