National Disability Employment Awareness Month – Jeremy Reeves

RICHMOND, Va. -

Editor's Note: October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, an effort to confirm the federal government's commitment to ensuring disabled workers have access to good jobs, every month of every year.

Name: Jeremy Reeves

Organization: Defense Logistics Agency Aviation Strategic Acquisition and Programs Directorate

Years of service at DLA: Five years

What is your job title, and what do you do? I serve as the lead contract specialist and contracting officer, managing the Sikorsky long-term contracts (LTC). I also work other standalone projects, such as a holistic LTC for the new CH-53K airframe, and the Industrial Gas and Cylinder recompete.

How do you support the warfighter? I support the warfighter by maintaining a pipeline of parts to increase readiness for any unit that flies or maintains Sikorsky aircraft. Whether it's the iconic and vertical H-60 Blackhawk, or the tried-and-true H-53E, my job is to work with the original equipment manufacturer to provide the warfighter with support in all operations, foreign and domestic.

The theme for the 2024 National Disability Employment Awareness Month is "Access to Good Jobs for All." In your words, briefly explain what this means to you? To me, "Access to Good Jobs for All" means, regardless of a person's perceived abilities, there are fulfilling employment opportunities available for everyone. I had no idea when I started over 15 years ago that a program between the National Industries for the Blind and the Department of Defense would lead me to the career path that I'm on today.

Tell us something unique about you. I love to cook. I find prepping and cooking to be very relaxing, and it helps me to decompress, especially after spending all day inches away from a computer screen. I could spend the whole day outside by the smoker making ribs or brisket. I also like to spend time with my family listening to a good book or podcast.

What is one thing you'd like others to know about individuals with a disability? Honestly, I don't think there is one thing that's universal amongst all persons with disabilities. We're all individuals, same as any other demographic of people; we just happen to lack certain capabilities.

What are you most proud of? My wife and daughter. Being blind isn't always the easiest, so having their love and support keeps me going every day.
