WASHINGTON-Today, U.S. Helsinki Commission Chairman Representative Joe Wilson (SC-02), Co-Chairman Senator Ben Cardin (MD), Ranking Member Representative Steve Cohen (TN-09), and Ranking Member Senator Roger Wicker (MS) issued the following statement congratulating Moldovan President Maia Sandu on her re-election and the Moldovan people on conducting successful democratic elections:
"Over the past two weeks, the Moldovan people voted to enshrine their commitment to European Union accession in their constitution and re-elect President Maia Sandu, who has been a champion of the Moldovan people's aspirations for a democratic and secure Moldova. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to President Sandu and the Moldovan people on these successful elections and their continued progress towards European integration. Despite Russian attempts to interfere with and undermine the will of the Moldovan people, Moldovan democratic institutions held strong."
Members of the U.S. Helsinki Commission leadership have long been champions of Moldova's pursuit of its democratic path and pursuit of Euro-Atlantic integration. In July 2023, the U.S. Helsinki Commission held a hearing entitled, "Supporting a Democratic and Secure Moldova," convening senior U.S. and Moldovan parliamentary leadership to explore how the United States can continue to support to support Moldova's democratic reform agenda, anti-corruption efforts, and domestic and regional security goals.
