Expand Social Security Caucus Co-Chairs Larson, Dingell, Grijalva and Assistant Democratic Leader Neguse Statement on the 89th Anniversary of Social Security

Washington, D.C. - Today, Expand Social Security Caucus Co-Chairs John B. Larson (CT-01), Debbie Dingell (MI-06), and Raúl Grijalva (AZ-07), and Assistant Democratic Leader Joe Neguse (CO-02) released the following statement on the 89th Anniversary of Social Security.

"Eighty-nine years ago, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law, guaranteeing America's seniors could retire with dignity," said Larson, Dingell, Grijalva, and Neguse. "Today, nearly 70 million Americans rely on Social Security and 10,000 Baby Boomers a day are becoming eligible. It is our number one anti-poverty program for children and the elderly, but benefits have not been enhanced in more than 50 years. As the cornerstone of financial security for our seniors as well as children, widows, and disabled workers, Social Security is one of our nation's greatest success stories.

"Meanwhile, Donald Trump and his MAGA Republican allies in Congress continue to showcase how out of touch they are with working Americans," the members continued. "Republicans have proposed devastating cuts to Social Security, including raising the retirement age, both through their Project 2025 manifesto and the latest Republican Study Committee budget. As Democrats, we are united with President Biden and Vice President Harris to protect and strengthen this hard-earned benefit by making the wealthy pay their fair share. Together, we will ensure this program continues to stay strong for years to come and enhance benefits, not cut them!"
