Shooting Injures One, PPB Officer Struck By Stray Bullet

September 25, 2024 09:55

One person was injured, and an officer with the Portland Police Bureau was struck by a stray bullet, in an early morning shooting.

On Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at approximately 12:35 a.m., officers responded to reports of a threat with a weapon in the area of East Burnside Street and Southeast Grand Avenue. When they arrived, officers determined two other officers were on an unrelated call when a shooting occurred involving people inside numerous moving vehicles. Despite the two officers and a community member taking cover, one of the officers was struck in the heel of his boot. Fortunately, the bullet did not penetrate the boot. Instead, it appears to have lodged in the boot. The officer was transported to an area hospital for treatment of a minor injury.

As all of this was unfolding, a gunshot victim was dropped off at a hospital via a private vehicle. Officers determined the victim, who is expected to survive, was involved in the shooting.

PPB's Enhanced Community Safety Team (ECST) responded to the scene to conduct an investigation. No arrests have been made.

"I am beyond relieved to learn that both the community member and officer will be okay," Chief Bob Day said. "What unfolded early Wednesday morning serves as a reminder that we must continue to take a holistic approach in addressing gun violence in our city."
