Co-Curricular Activities an Integral Part of Holistic Development

We thank youth forum writer Lai Si Yu for her feedback ("别让课外辅助活动变质, Aug 28").

Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) are integral to our students' holistic development, and they serve as platforms for students to discover their interests and talents, foster friendships with peers from diverse backgrounds, and cultivate a lifelong love for a chosen activity. Through CCA, students develop character, leadership and 21st Century Competencies that will prepare them for a rapidly changing world. While CCA participation is mandatory for secondary school students, it is strongly encouraged for primary school and post-secondary students.

The Ministry of Education has been making concerted efforts to encourage broader definitions of success and a shift away from an overemphasis on academic grades. For example, the removal of mid-year examinations aims to provide students with more time and space to further develop holistically, and explore their interests and strengths.

We are cognisant that these intended mindset shifts will take time. We will continue to work with parents and students to engender a mindset shift in society that broadens the definitions of success, and provide opportunities for our students to explore and pursue their interests to support their holistic development.
