Pingree Cosponsors Constitutional Amendment to Prevent Complete Presidential Immunity

Maine First District Congresswoman Chellie Pingree is joining a Congressional push to reverse the U.S. Supreme Court's recent decision to grant presidents immunity from criminal prosecution. The constitutional amendment, introduced and led by Congressman Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.), is cosponsored by nearly 50 Democratic Members of Congress. This week, President Biden called for a similar constitutional amendment as part of his plan to reform the Supreme Court.

"Earlier this month, the United States Supreme Court undermined the foundation of our Constitution that no man is above the law. As Justice Sotomayor laid out in her powerful dissenting opinion, this decision could have severe long-term consequences and upsets the principles that have existed since our nation's founding," said Pingree. "This constitutional amendment not only corrects an error of this Supreme Court and protects our democracy, but ensures our nation endures for years to come."

Pingree is a cosponsor of the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency (SCERT) Act and the Supreme Court Ethics Act, which would bring accountability to the U.S. Supreme Court. Pingree has supported these efforts to provide for a binding code of conduct for justices, establish an ethics investigations counsel, and require disclosure of recusals.
