Governor Polis and Lt. Governor Primavera Release Statement Following President Joe Biden’s Formal Apology for the U.S. Role in Federal Indian Boarding Schools

DENVER - Today, Governor Polis and Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera released the following statement after President Biden's historic formal apology for the Federal Government's role in Indian Boarding Schools across the U.S.

"Since day one, our administration has worked to build a Colorado For All, where anyone can thrive. Today, as the federal government acknowledges this dark part of our history, we reaffirm our commitment to support all of our Tribal and American Indian/Alaska Native community partners and continue to seek opportunities for education, allowing Colorado and our nation to learn and heal," said Governor Polis and Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera. "As we build a more prosperous and inclusive future where anyone no matter their background, where they live, or what Tribe they affiliate with can thrive, it is important to acknowledge the tragic mistakes of the past. The hate and violence these boarding schools represented have no place in our Colorado For All."

The Polis-Primavera administration has passed HB22-1327 Native American Boarding Schools and HB24-1444 Federal Indian Boarding Schools Research Program. Governor Polis included $1 million in his 2024-2025 budget and in HB24-1444 for History Colorado to continue Tribal consultations and listening sessions with the American Indian/Alaska Native communities within Colorado.
