Loaded Firearm Recovered After a Traffic Stop in Roxbury

At about 10:10 PM, on Thursday, August 15, 2024, officers assigned to District B-2 (Roxbury) arrested Mandell Johnson, 31, of Newton, on firearm related charges.

Officers were on patrol in the area of Quincy Street towards Blue Hill Avenue when they observed a motor vehicle operating recklessly and not slowing down before turning into traffic. Officers immediately activated their marked cruiser's lights and sirens to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle slowly came to a full stop in the area of 4 Maybury Street.

Officers made contact with the occupants of the vehicle and requested the operator's driver's license. Officers observed both occupants to be shaking in a nervous manner and could not answer basic questions. After further investigation, officers requested the occupants to exit the vehicle.

Officers conducted a pat frisk of the passenger of the vehicle and immediately felt the presence of a firearm. The suspect attempted to flee from officers but was quickly placed into handcuffs. Officers determined that the operator had a suspended driver's license, and he would be summonsed to court.

The firearm was later determined to be a Mossberg MC1-SC with one round in the chamber and five rounds in the magazine. Officers also observed that the firearm's serial number was removed.

Mandell was placed under arrest and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and Defacement of a Firearm Serial Number. He is expected to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court.
