TSTC instructors excited about fall semester

(MARSHALL, Texas) - More than 500 students have enrolled at Texas State Technical College's Marshall campus for the fall semester. The instructors and staff are looking forward to another successful academic year.

After an extended period of teaching third-semester students, Welding Technology instructor Asa Goolsbee is eager to teach first-semester students.

"The one thing I hope to see is an openness to learn," he said. "The best thing we can hope for these new students is that they take in everything like a sponge."

The Industrial Systems program will incorporate afternoon classes after offering only night courses for almost eight years. Instructor John Fondren said the program will have a total of 36 students this fall, an increase in enrollment over last year.

"We're excited about all of the younger people we've got coming in," he said. "The excitement I saw on their faces, because I brought them into the lab and talked with them a bit, they were just raring to go."

Electrical Lineworker and Management Technology instructor Samuel Roberts was eager to meet his new students.

"To watch a student overcome the obstacles of linework, learn new things and get better every day is what it's all about," he said.

Drafting and Design instructor Brenda Murrell has added two new 3D printers to her classroom to better instruct the students in her advanced computer-aided drafting class. She said she hopes her new and returning students will be fully engaged in the program and take ownership of their learning.

"I am looking forward to meeting our new students and continuing the culture of caring and mutual support with all of our returning students," Murrell said.
