Lori Chavez-DeRemer to Serve as Secretary of Labor

second Latina to hold the position of Secretary of Labor

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) today released the following statement from NALEO President Claudia M. Frometa following President-elect Donald Trump's nomination of U.S. Representative Lori Chavez-DeRemer to serve as the next Secretary of Labor:

"NALEO congratulates Congresswoman Lori Chavez-DeRemer on her nomination to head the Department of Labor. She will be the second Latina ever to hold this position. A California native, she had already made history by being the first Latina to be elected mayor of Happy Valley, Oregon, and is one of Oregon's only two Latinas ever to be elected to Congress. Her service on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce is among the experience she will bring to this position.

"With the economy as the central issue for Latinos in Election 2024, the Secretary of Labor will be one of the most critical Cabinet positions during the next four years. U.S. Representative Chavez-DeRemer's leadership will be paramount in managing American working conditions and ensuring workers have a seat at the table.

"We continue to encourage the President-elect and Congress to promote an inclusive Cabinet and administration that reflect today's America. We look forward to Congresswoman Chavez-DeRemer bringing her background to this top-level position and carrying out her functions as Secretary of Labor with integrity and strong leadership."
