08/19/2024 OlyPD Weekly Update 8 8 to 8 14 24

Crime Map and Updates

Welcome to our crimemap. You can search by address, date range, case number, or specific crime type. The map includes serious felony crimes, vehicle prowls, thefts (except shoplifting), and arrests beginning in Nov. 2020. Click on icons for more detail. Addresses listed are rounded to the hundred block. For a complete list of case reports, visit olympiawa.gov/p2c.

Notable Trends

  • Three aggravated assaults reported with arrests in two of the cases. In one arrest, the suspect was arguing with the victim and struck him with something that caused a deep laceration. Multiple witnesses described the suspect, and he was located nearby. In the other arrest, the suspect punched the victim and broke her nose. In the last case, the victim felt a pain in her leg and started bleeding. It was later confirmed to be a gunshot wound.
  • Nine auto thefts reported for the week, three of which were motorcycles. In one case, the vehicle was recovered in Olympia. While searching the car, officers recovered property reported stolen in a vehicle prowl the day prior. Two Hyundais were stolen. We still have free steering wheel locks available at our main station in City Hall for Hyundai owners.
  • A suspect was arrested in the rape reported.
  • Two robberies with an arrest in one case. In both cases, suspects assaulted employees trying to stop them from shoplifting.
  • Six bikes were stolen. Two were stolen in a residential burglary when a garage was accidentally left open overnight. One was stolen from a porch, one had a cable lock cut from a bike rack, and one case reported online did not include how it was stolen. In the last case, the victim left the bike unsecured on a bike rack. The theft was reported quickly, and the suspect was caught on security camera. He was located and arrested later, and the bike was recovered.
  • Thirteen vehicle prowls reported this week. In one case, a witness reported seeing the suspect trying door handles of multiple vehicles. He was wearing the victim's sweatshirt when officers located and arrested him. Great job reporting suspicious behavior.

Other Items

  • Officers responded to 1,100 calls for service.
  • We hosted our annual Youth Academy summer camp last week with 16 middle schoolers joining us to learn all about OPD and different police topics. In this week's photo, K9 Arco took teams on a track during the academy. Registration is through Olympia Parks, Arts & Recreation when the summer camps open in the spring.
  • There won't be a report for this week (8/15 - 21), I'll be out of the office the second half of the week.
