Rosen-Backed Bipartisan Bill to Increase Awareness of Veteran Home Loan Program Passes Senate

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Last week, the U.S. Senate passed bipartisan legislation that Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) helped introduce to increase veterans' awareness of the VA Home Loan Program. The bipartisan VA Home Loan Awareness Act adds a disclosure to the standard mortgage pre-qualification application to inform veterans of the VA Home Loan Program, which offers veterans exclusive opportunities for home financing like no down payment, no private mortgage insurance, and typically lower interest rates than conventional loans. Despite these benefits, only 13 percent of veterans ever utilize their VA Home Loan benefit. Studies show that only half of home-owning veterans say they were informed of this program by their lender.

"Nevada's current housing crisis is also impacting our veterans, and it's crucial that we help them access the benefits they've earned to make buying a house easier and more affordable," said Senator Rosen. "I'm proud that the Senate has passed bipartisan legislation I helped introduce to do just that. I will continue working across the aisle to ensure our nation's veterans can access the benefits they earned and need."

Senator Rosen has been leading bipartisan efforts to support Nevada's veterans. Earlier this year, she sent a letter to Senate Appropriators requesting funding to help homeless veterans find housing through rental assistance. Senator Rosen helped introduce bipartisan legislation to help veteran parents better access G.I. Bill benefits. She introduced bipartisan legislation to permanently maintain a helpline for veterans to obtain information and assistance with all services from the VA. In the recent bipartisan government funding package, Senator Rosen secured funding to increase access to affordable housing for veterans, continue building Nevada's first national veterans cemetery in Elko, and increase funding for veteran's access to telehealth. And she helped introduce bipartisan legislation to officially authorize the construction of a new veterans hospital in Reno, which she also successfully pushed the president to include in his 2024 budget request.
