Budget deal falls short on ongoing funding for housing and homelessness

Sacramento - Following the Legislature's vote on the 2024-25 State Budget, League of California Cities Executive Director and CEO Carolyn Coleman issued the below statement:

"Cal Cities is pleased the Legislature and Governor agreed on a budget that recognizes and supports the real progress cities are making to support unhoused Californians and connect them to vital services. The state heard our calls to support local homelessness efforts. The one-time, $1 billion for the Homeless Housing, Assistance and Prevention grant program will help cities provide more supportive services, speed up affordable housing development, and increase shelter space.

However, even as we respond to the state deficit, we need to keep our eyes on addressing the housing and homelessness crisis. This will require a multi-year solution. The more than $1 billion in cuts to various affordable housing programs and the lack of ongoing funding to reduce homelessness only prolongs the crisis and jeopardizes the health and safety of the Californians who need our help the most.

If we are committed to making meaningful progress in addressing homelessness and boosting affordable housing production, the state's budget investments must be aimed at long-term solutions. Cal Cities stands by its calls for ongoing funding to prevent homelessness, boost affordable housing, and ensure every Californian has access to the housing and services they deserve."

Established in 1898, the League of California Cities is a nonprofit statewide association that advocates for cities with the state and federal governments and provides education and training services to elected and appointed city officials.
