Annual Free Barbecue for Utilities Week on Wednedsay, Oct. 9

The City of Fort Morgan is again celebrating Utilities Week during the first full week in October to recognize the value of the municipal utilities owned and operated by the city: electric, gas, water, sewer and trash service.

The city invites ALL residents to the annual Utilities Week Barbecue on Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Fort Morgan Fieldhouse located at 1239 E. Kiowa Ave.

The event will feature exhibits on city utility services, chances to WIN utility gift certificates and other useful information packed into a FREE Swag Bag.

A number of local companies have donated to make this free barbecue possible: Cargill Meat Solutions, Edwards Right Price Market, Leprino Foods, Pepsi-Cola, K&S Distributing, Sailsbery Supply, Safeway, Affordable Propane and Walmart. City utility employees help set up the event, cook and serve the food and staff the various informational displays.

Fort Morgan has enjoyed the benefits of being served by a consumer-owned utility system for many years. What that means is that customers have a voice in how their utilities operate.

Fort Morgan utilities are in business to serve their customers exclusively. Customer-owned and customer-focused, the city's utilities are defined by not-for-profit operation and the city's commitment to providing the lowest possible costs consistent with sound business practices and community values.

Thanks to both the foresight of a number of the city's early leaders and employees over the years who have worked diligently to keep the lights on, the water running, homes and businesses heated by natural gas, trash picked up and the sewer system flowing, the city has truly benefited from the ownership of its own utilities.

While the utilities may operate as nonprofit entities, they pay great dividends to residents in the form of reliable services and economical utility rates.

Public utilities also mean local control. Fort Morgan's governance structure allows its customers to be elected to the City Council, which acts as the governing board that sets utility rates and budgets and oversees customer service. The city's track record shows dependable service with few outages and quick recovery times.

The City of Fort Morgan is proud to serve this community and strives to provide its citizens and businesses with the most reliable and affordable utilities possible. City officials are also proud to recognize the economic and social contributions of community-owned utility systems.
