Newton Police Department to Transition Animal Control Services to New City-Operated Facility

The Newton Police Department will end its partnership with Parkview Animal Hospital effective October 15, 2024, due to changes in the hospital's business model.

To ensure the continued care and housing of stray animals, the Newton Police Department is transitioning animal control services to a new City-operated kennel facility. This in-house solution, approved by the Newton City Council, includes the purchase of a modular kennel unit. Construction is expected to be completed by late fall 2024.

The new facility, which will be located on City property, will feature eight kennels, providing sufficient space to house animals. In the interim, Parkview Animal Hospital has agreed to offer limited, non-contractual housing services for the City through December 31, 2024. However, residents may experience interruptions or limited animal control services until the new facility becomes fully operational.

Once completed, the facility will be overseen by the City's Community Service Officers (CSOs) in the Code Enforcement Division. Inspections and licensing for the facility will be conducted by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and a licensed veterinarian.

The City will continue to post stray dogs picked up by the Newton Police Department on its website at www.newtongov.org/straypets. Residents can also find more information about the City's animal control services and a summary of Chapter 90 of the Code of Ordinances at www.newtongov.org/animalcontrolfacility.
