Major I-84 traffic changes planned between Jerome and Twin Falls after Labor Day

JEROME - The Idaho Transportation Department is preparing to shift traffic from the outside lanes of I-84 into the newly constructed lanes in the median between Jerome and Twin Falls. The traffic shift will occur over multiple weekends in September following Labor Day and will allow crews to begin work on the outside lanes of I-84 as they continue to widen the interstate to three lanes in each direction as part of Governor Little's Leading Idaho program.

As crews work to move traffic into the median, motorists should expect traffic shifts, ramp closures and lane restrictions on I-84 each weekend from 8 p.m. on Friday evening to 6 a.m. on Monday morning.

During the first weekend (September 6-9) the project team plans to shift eastbound lanes of traffic. Motorists can expect:

  • The South Jerome Interchange eastbound on-ramp will close.
  • The Twin Falls Interchange eastbound off-ramp will close.
  • Detours will be in place. Eastbound motorists planning to exit at the Twin Falls Interchange must detour to the South Jerome Interchange. The next opportunity to exit is at the Eden Interchange, 9 miles east of Twin Falls. Click here to view a detour map.
  • Eastbound I-84 lane changes and restrictions will occur.

During the second weekend (September 13-16) the project team plans to shift westbound I-84 traffic. Motorists can expect:

  • The South Jerome Interchange westbound off-ramp will close.
  • The Twin Falls Interchange westbound on-ramps will close.
  • Detours will be in place. Click here to view a detour map.
  • Westbound I-84 lane changes and restrictions will occur.

"ITD encourages motorists to plan ahead for delays and drive with caution when traveling this route over these weekends in September," District 4 Engineer Jesse Barrus said. "We want to thank everyone for their patience as crews work to shift traffic as quickly and safely as possible."

Once the traffic shift is complete, motorists can expect:

  • E 400 South Road will close under I-84 for approximately one month beginning in mid-September.
  • I-84 will be restricted to one lane in each direction at night. Occasional daytime lane restrictions may be necessary.
  • I-84 traffic will remain in the new pattern until late 2025.

This work is weather-dependent and may be delayed due to conditions.

Construction is anticipated to continue until 2026. Those who are interested in learning more about the project are invited to visit the project website at itdprojects.idaho.gov/pages/84jerometotwin, call (208) 391-3735 or email [email protected].

Funding for this project comes from the Leading Idaho program. The program allows ITD to address rapid growth and build critical infrastructure today that would otherwise take many years to fund and build.
