Traceability and control in connection with Brazilian beef

Traceability and control in connection with Brazilian beef

7.11.2024

Priority question for written answer P-002460/2024
to the Commission
Rule 144
Alexander Bernhuber (PPE)

DG SANTE's audit 2024-8087 in Brazil revealed considerable shortcomings in traceability and control in connection with Brazilian beef imported into the EU. Of particular concern are shortcomings as regards detecting the use of hormones, especially oestradiol 17β, which is banned in the EU, and the lack of effective quality and residue controls, as detailed in the audit report.

  • 1.What measures is the Commission planning to take to remedy the infringements and quality shortcomings that have been established in connection with Brazilian beef?
  • 2.Why has no preventive import ban been imposed until Brazil provides evidence that it fully complies with EU standards?
  • 3.How is the Commission ensuring that no unsafe residues in beef products from Brazil reach EU markets?
