On October 12, 2024, at about 1:00 a.m. State Police of Troop T responded to the reports of a wrong-way driver driving northbound in the southbound lanes of the I-87 Thruway in Albany, NY. Troopers patrolled the area in an attempt to locate the vehicle. While patrolling at about 1:05 a.m. Troopers located a two-car crash on I-90 eastbound just west of exit 24 in Albany, NY. One of the vehicles involved matched the description of the wrong-way vehicle, and the driver was identified as McCumber. McCumber and the driver of the other vehicle were both extricated and transported to Albany Medical Center with serious injuries, where they were both listed in critical but stable condition. A passenger from the victim's vehicle was also transported with non-life-threatening injuries and was later discharged.

The eastbound lanes of I-90 were closed between Exit 25 and Exit 24 for approximately 4 hours for the investigation and collision reconstruction.
