BSWM Leads Tree Planting Activity in Bataan for Soil Conservation Month

The DA-Bureau of Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM) through the Soil Conservation and Management Division (SCMD) spearheaded the annual tree planting activity in celebration of the Soil Conservation Month 2024 in the country with the theme "Conserve Soil, Sustain Life." The event took place on June 27 at Barangay Maligaya, Dinalupihan, Bataan, and on June 28 at Barangay Mabatang, Abucay, Bataan.

The tree planting initiative was a collaborative effort, engaging various community stakeholders, including the Local Government Units (LGUs) of Abucay and Dinalupihan, farmer cooperatives, local police and fire protection personnel, barangay officials, schools, and BSWM-SCMD staff. This collective endeavor reflects a shared commitment to environmental conservation and community development.

The chosen sites for the tree planting activity are integral parts of the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Project, an ongoing effort aimed at restoring the ecological balance and improving the water quality of Manila Bay. This Project encompasses a range of activities, including reforestation, waste management, and community education, all geared toward reversing the adverse effects of pollution and habitat destruction in and around the Bay Area.

On behalf of DA-BSWM Director Dr. Gina Parde-Nilo, SCMD Chief Engr. Eduardo V. Alberto welcomed the participants with an inspiring message. He emphasized the importance of the tree-planting activity, stating, "This initiative is not just about planting trees; it's about planting hope for future generations. Trees are vital to our environment as they prevent soil erosion, improve air quality, and support biodiversity. Our collective efforts today will have a lasting impact on the sustainability and health of our ecosystems."

Aside from the tree planting, one of the highlights of the event was the awarding of plaques of recognition to the LGUs of Abucay and Dinalupihan for their proactive adaptation of the Sustainable Land Resource Management Approach (SLRMA) technology as part of their agricultural projects. Chief Engr. Alberto together with the Degraded Land Resources and Rehabilitation Section (DLRRS) OIC Engr. Michelle A. Roque presented the awards, commending both LGUs for their commitment to integrating sustainable agricultural practices that promote soil conservation and enhance land productivity.

He added, "The adaptation of SLRMA technology by the LGUs of Abucay and Dinalupihan is a significant step towards sustainable agriculture. This technology helps maintain soil fertility, reducing soil erosion, and ensuring that our lands remain productive for future generations. Your dedication serves as a model for other communities to follow."

Soil Conservation Month is an annual celebration in the Philippines, and is spearheaded by the DA-BSWM-Soil Conservation and Management Division. The month-long observance highlights the importance of soil health and conservation practices in promoting sustainable agriculture. It also aims to raise awareness and encourage community involvement in preserving the country's soil resources.

The BSWM's tree planting activity not only supports the goals of the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Project but also reinforces the agency's commitment to soil conservation and sustainable land management practices. By planting trees, the BSWM and its partners are taking proactive steps to combat soil erosion, enhance biodiversity, and contribute to the overall health of the environment.
