Metro's Integrated Command and Communications Center (MICC), in coordination with the Metro Transit Police Department (MTPD) and other first responders, will conduct a full-scale emergency response exercise on Sunday, November 3, at the Andrews Federal Center Bus Garage in Hillcrest Heights, Maryland.
The Metro Transit Police Department, MICC, and Prince Georges County Police Department (PGPD), along with bus, consequence management personnel, and support staff will take part in the exercise designed to simulate a real-life emergency. People in the area may notice a large number of emergency vehicles responding to the bus garage. Please be advised this is just an exercise.
First responders and Metro staff will be able to test their ability in a rapid response involving a simulated active shooter incident involving a Metrobusand Metro facility. The exercise will evaluate rescue efforts and response coordination and communication between on-scene responders, Metrobus operations staff, Metro Transit Police, and support personnel.
In addition to the first scenario, K-9 teams and the bomb squad will utilize a suspicious package skills station to train on package identification and disruption.
This full-scale exercise is a critical step in enhancing Metro's preparedness for active shooter events. The lessons learned from this simulation will directly inform the development of more effective incident management procedures, ensuring the safety of passengers, employees, and first responders.
There will be no impact to routine bus service in the area.
The exercise will begin at 7:00 a.m. and first responders and emergency vehicles should clear the bus garage at or around 12:00 p.m.
