Blumenthal & Hawley to Hold Hearing on Artificial Intelligence Regulation Featuring Insider Perspectives

[WASHINGTON, DC] - U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Josh Hawley (R-MO), Chair and Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law, will convene a hearing on Tuesday, September 17 at 2:00 PM titled, "Oversight of AI: Insiders' Perspectives." The hearing will explore guardrails to protect consumers from the harms of AI and delve into experts' firsthand experience in the industry.

Next week's hearing will be the Subcommittee's sixth AI-focused hearing this Congress and include testimony from the following witnesses:

• Helen Toner, Director of Strategy and Foundational Research Grants, Center for Security and Emerging Technology, Georgetown University

• Margaret Mitchell, Former Staff Research Scientist, Google AI

• William Saunders, Former Member of Technical Staff at OpenAI

• David Evan Harris, Senior Policy Advisor, California Initiative for Technology and Democracy, Chancellor's Public Scholar, UC Berkeley

The Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law has jurisdiction over legal issues pertaining to technology and social media platforms, including online privacy and civil rights as well as the impacts of new or emerging technologies. Last May, Blumenthal and Hawley held their first hearing titled, "Oversight of AI: Rules for Artificial Intelligence" which included testimony from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, IBM Chief Privacy & Trust Officer Christina Montgomery, and NYU Professor Gary Marcus.
