City Encourages Sustainable Halloween Practices
10/29/2024
This Halloween, the City of Tulsa encourages residents to celebrate more sustainably by adopting eco-friendly alternatives and reducing waste for decorations, costumes, and candy collection. By making small changes to traditional Halloween practices, Tulsans can reduce their environmental impact and promote a greener, more sustainable future.
As part of the City of Tulsa's ongoing commitment to improving sustainability and reducing waste, we suggest the following practices for an eco-friendlier Halloween:
-
Use Live Pumpkins for Decorations - Instead of relying on plastic or synthetic decorations that eventually end up in landfills, use real pumpkins as a natural, biodegradable option. After Halloween, you can save pumpkin seeds and bake them for a tasty healthy treat or save pumpkin seeds to grow your own pumpkins in your garden. You could also compost your live pumpkins to give your garden an extra nutrient-rich boost and reduce your Halloween waste.
-
Swap Costume Masks for Face Painting - Plastic costume masks are often single-use and made from non-recyclable materials. This year, try face painting as a fun, reusable alternative that adds a creative and personal touch to Halloween costumes. Look for non-toxic, eco-friendly face paints to ensure the safety of both you and the environment.
-
Opt for Reusable Candy Buckets - Instead of using plastic bags or buckets for trick-or-treating, choose reusable metal pails, cloth bags, or reusable baskets. This reduces the amount of single-use plastic waste generated.
"We want our community to have a fun and festive Halloween while also making choices that are better for the environment by reducing waste which is better for Tulsa," said Philip Eakes, Refuse and Recycling Systems Manager, for the City of Tulsa. "By embracing these sustainable alternatives, we can reduce waste and make a positive impact on our city's future. Every small action matters."
