Louisiana Department of Education and The National WWII Museum Honor Future Servicemembers During Celebrate Freedom Week

(NEW ORLEANS, LA) - Today, the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE), in collaboration with The National WWII Museum, honored Louisiana students who have committed to serving in the United States military. The recognition ceremony, held as part of Celebrate Freedom Week and on Constitution Day, took place at the museum's BB's Stage Door Canteen and celebrated the commitment of local high school and college students who will soon join the armed forces.

Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley presented each recruit with a challenge coin and a pocket Constitution to commemorate their service. Dr. Brumley emphasized the importance of these symbols, noting that the challenge coin represents the dedication required of those in the military, while the pocket Constitution serves as a reminder of the freedoms they have sworn to protect.

"We are proud to honor these young men and women who have chosen to dedicate their lives to defending the values our country was built on," said Dr. Brumley. "Their service embodies the very principles we teach during Celebrate Freedom Week-understanding freedom, honoring sacrifice, and safeguarding our nation."

The ceremony included remarks from Col. Peter Crean, Vice President of Education and Access at The National WWII Museum, Ken Bradford, Chief of Staff for the LDOE, and Conrad Appel, member of the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. CPT Matt Gimenez of the United States Army also led the recruits in the Oath of Enlistment, marking their formal commitment to military service.

"These young recruits stand at the forefront of a new generation of servicemembers who will uphold the freedoms we cherish," said Dr. Brumley.

The event also featured the presentation of a proclamation from Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, recognizing the importance of Celebrate Freedom Week and the role of education in fostering civic responsibility.
