Fall Family Weekend Brings Students, Loved Ones Together on Rocky Top

Fall Family Weekend at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, was held Sept. 13-15, bringing more than 6,500 family members to campus to share in UT's rich traditions and culture.

From visiting favorite campus spots to learning more about the university's resources and services, the annual gathering is an opportunity for Volunteer families to immerse themselves in life at UT. Engaging events provided opportunities for families to strengthen their connection to the university while exploring how they can support their students' success.

"Throughout the weekend we saw students and families celebrating all the unique aspects of being a Volunteer," said Joe Pierce, associate dean of students. "An integral part of the weekend was exposing families to timely resources for celebration and support."

Like their students, families had the opportunity to learn from UT faculty members. Jon Han of the Department of English and members of the Taylor Swift Literary Club student organization hosted an engaging session on the literary qualities of Swift's lyrics, while Director of Space Science Outreach Paul Lewis led a stargazing session using the Nielsen Physics Building's powerful rooftop telescope.

The weekend included an exposition event with the Division of Student Success, which allowed families to speak with representatives from departments within the division and take part in engaging activities.

Other featured activities included the Tennessee Family Tailgate and Sunday brunch at Rocky Top Dining Hall, along with events from offices and academic departments across campus. Attendees received T-shirts, hats and game day totes filled with Volunteer Family swag.

Ag Day 2024 was held in conjunction with Fall Family Weekend on Sept. 14. Faculty, staff, alumni, current and prospective students, friends and family were invited to learn about the UT Institute of Agriculture as they enjoyed live animal exhibits, music and department-based demonstrations.

All families with active membership in the Tennessee Family Association - which is free to join - are welcome to participate in Fall Family Weekend.
