State v. Jarvis Oneal Cloption

Decatur, Ga.- DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston announces a conviction by guilty plea in the case of an Ellenwood man charged with attacking his stepfather and another man.

On Friday, November 1, 2024, Jarvis Oneal Cloption, 53, pleaded guilty to two counts of Abuse of an Elder Person and three counts of Aggravated Assault in connection with the violent assaults of his 72-year-old stepfather and his stepfather's 52-year-old friend.

DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Yolanda Parker-Smith accepted the plea agreement, which requires Defendant Cloption to serve 20 years in confinement.

According to the investigation, Defendant Cloption was staying in his stepfather's home in the 2200 block of Boulder Run Trail in Ellenwood after being released from prison. At around 1 a.m. on September 4, 2020, while his stepfather was sleeping, Cloption attacked his stepfather with a knife and demanded money from him.

Defendant Cloption's stepfather told him, "Don't kill me," and Cloption began to stab him repeatedly in the face, neck and under his arm. The defendant threw his stepfather to the ground and stole his wallet.

A friend of Cloption's stepfather was also staying at the house. He heard cries for help and tried to intervene. Defendant Cloption then started stabbing him in the face, arm, and the back of the head.

First responders rushed Cloption's stepfather to Grady Memorial Hospital and his friend to Atlanta Medical Center where they were treated for their injuries.

The case, assigned to the Crimes Against Elder Persons and Adults with Disabilities Unit, was prosecuted by Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Franklin Engram, Senior Assistant District Attorney Laura Alford, District Attorney Investigator Charles Maupin and Victim Advocate Tina Williamson. Former DeKalb County Police Department Detective J. Hayes led the initial investigation.
