The Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) today released U.S. airlines' September 2024 fuel cost and consumption numbers indicating U.S. scheduled service airlines used 1.532 billion gallons of fuel, 9.2% less fuel than in August 2024 (1.686 billion gallons) and 3.7% more than in pre-pandemic September 2019. The cost per gallon of fuel in September 2024 ($2.33) was down 14 cents (5.6%) from August 2024 ($2.47) and up $0.37 (18.8%) from September 2019. Total September 2024 fuel expenditure ($3.56B) was down 14.3% from August 2024 ($4.16B) and up 23.3% from pre-pandemic September 2019.
Year-over-year changes in fuel consumption and cost for September 2024 includes a 0.4% increase in domestic fuel consumption, an 26.6% decrease in domestic fuel cost, and a 26.9% decrease in cost per gallon. Domestic fuel consumption decreased 8.8% from August 2024 to September 2024, while increasing 4.8% from September 2019. Increased fuel consumption reflects an increase in airline passenger travel over the same period.

Airline fuel costs may be affected by hedging, contracts that allow airlines to limit exposure to future price changes. None of the cost numbers are adjusted for inflation. The month-to-month numbers are not seasonally adjusted.
