Visit of Minister Mauro Vieira to India New Delhi, August 26 27, 2024

Minister of Foreign Affairs Mauro Vieira is visiting New Delhi, India, on August 26-27. Today, August 26th, he participated in an event with Brazilian and Indian companies. On August 27th, he will co-chair the IX Meeting of the Joint Commission for Political, Economic, Scientific, Technological, and Cultural Cooperation between Brazil and India ("COMISTA") alongside India's Minister of External Affairs, Dr. S. Jaishankar.

COMISTA is the main coordination mechanism between Brazil and India, created to guide and assess bilateral cooperation. In this meeting, discussions will focus on promoting trade, investment, and cooperation in various fields, particularly in agriculture, defense, and energy, as well as science and technology, digital governance, and space research. Strategic issues of interest to both countries will be debated, and the coordination between Brazil and India in international forums such as BRICS, IBAS, and the G20-currently chaired by Brazil, following India's presidency-will be reinforced. The foreign ministers will sign an "Agreement on Cooperation in Combating International Terrorism and Transnational Organized Crime."

The Joint Commission meeting will also include representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply; the Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services; and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Brazil-India relations are of strategic importance. The convergence of perspectives and interests on the international stage is evident in the political dialogue and the wide range of sectoral cooperation initiatives. The extensive agenda underscores the excellent state of relations between Brazil and India, which have maintained a Strategic Partnership since 2006.

Relations with India offer significant potential for the development of trade and investment in both countries. In 2023, bilateral trade totaled USD 11.5 billion, making India the 13th largest destination for Brazilian exports (USD 4.9 billion) and the 6th largest source of imports for Brazil (USD 6.9 billion). Between September 2023 and August 2024, 31 Brazilian trade and investment promotion missions visited India, seeking business opportunities, particularly in the defense, agriculture, and energy sectors.
