Mayor Kapszukiewicz Announces Significant Decrease in 2024 3rd Quarter Crime Statistics

Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz and Police Chief Michael Troendle announced the 2024 third quarter crime statistics during a press conference at the Safety Building, highlighting a significant decrease in crime rates across several categories compared to the same period in 2023.

The third quarter statistics show that Toledo is making significant strides in reducing crime in critical areas, such as homicides and theft from motor vehicles.

The report reveals a 16% drop in homicides, with 27 incidents reported in 2024 compared to 32 in 2023. Robberies also declined, with 292 reported cases this year, reflecting a 5% decrease from 307 cases in 2023. Theft from motor vehicles saw a substantial reduction of 26%, totaling 857 incidents reported this year compared to 1,164 last year. Additionally, the number of persons shot slightly decreased by 1%, totaling 154 incidents in 2024, down from 158 in 2023. However, burglaries increased slightly by 0.2%, rising to 1,027 cases. Conversely, auto thefts decreased by 12%, with 901 incidents reported this year compared to 1,023 last year.

As the city continues to implement its comprehensive public safety plan, residents are encouraged to actively participate in shaping the future of safety in Toledo. This includes providing feedback on community safety priorities and engaging with local initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of crime.

"The progress we've seen in crime reduction reflects the hard work of our community, law enforcement, and Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (MONSE). We will build on this momentum to ensure Toledo remains a safe place for all of our residents," Mayor Kapszukiewicz said. "While we celebrate these achievements, we still recognize the challenges ahead in keeping our neighborhoods safe. Together, we will continue to work towards a more hopeful and safer future for all Toledoans."
