Singapore and the Republic of Korea Sign Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters...

1. The Government of Singapore and the Government of the Republic of Korea signed the Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters (the "Treaty") today.

2. The Treaty was signed by Singapore's Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law Mr K Shanmugam SC and the Republic of Korea's Minister of Justice Mr Park Sung Jae during a signing ceremony in Singapore. Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Singapore Mr Hong Jin-wook was also present to witness the signing.

3. The Treaty provides a framework for both countries to exchange requests for legal assistance in criminal matters, covering matters such as locating or identifying persons or items; taking of evidence; and executing searches and seizures. This will strengthen cooperation between both countries in the prevention and suppression of crime.

4. Minister Shanmugam said, "Singapore and the Republic of Korea enjoy close and longstanding relations, and the signing of the Treaty builds on this strong foundation. The Treaty plays an important role in our joint efforts to combat crime as it sets out a framework and standards for a range of mutual legal assistance between Singapore and the Republic of Korea. This Treaty will cement the already strong partnership between the two countries."

5. Prior to the ceremony, Minister Shanmugam and Minister Park also exchanged views on several topics, including other possible areas of cooperation.

6. The two Ministers reaffirmed the Treaty's role in enhancing the strong relationship between Singapore and the Republic of Korea, and looked forward to greater cooperation between both countries.
