Gillibrand Statement On Confirmation Of Jeannette Vargas To Serve On U.S. District Court For The Southern District Of New York

Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand applauded the Senate's confirmation of Jeannette Vargas to serve as a judge on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Senator Gillibrand recommended Ms. Vargas to President Biden in early 2024.

"I am honored and grateful that the Senate has voted to confirm Jeannette Vargas to serve on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York," said Senator Gillibrand. "Ms. Vargas has more than two decades of service as a federal prosecutor. In addition to her expertise in complex civil litigation, she has also worked diligently to protect and strengthen the civil rights of the LGBTQ community. Now, as a federal judge, Ms. Vargas will use her sharp legal mind and extensive experience to uphold the highest principles of justice and fairness for all Americans."

Jeannette Vargas most recently served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York and had served as the deputy chief of the Civil Division since 2016. Ms. Vargas joined the U.S. Attorney's Office in 2002 as a line AUSA in the Civil Division, became deputy chief of the Tax and Bankruptcy Unit in 2009, was promoted to chief of the Tax and Bankruptcy Unit in 2010, and served as senior trial counsel from 2014-2016. Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney's Office, Ms. Vargas clerked for then-Judge Sonia Sotomayor on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Previously, Ms. Vargas was an associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett.

Ms. Vargas received her J.D. from Yale Law School in 2000 and her B.A., magna cum laude, from Harvard College in 1995.
