Defense Logistics Agency Distribution, Anniston, Alabama, employees donned pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Oct. 24 at Anniston Army Depot.
Observed each October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an international health campaign to increase awareness of the disease and raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. Originally established in 1985, Breast Cancer Awareness Month features numerous events geared toward raising awareness and gaining funding for research and a cure.
DLA Distribution, Anniston, Alabama, employees were encouraged to wear pink in observance of the campaign and to show support for their colleagues, family members and friends affected by breast cancer. The "pink out" served to raise awareness, increase self-awareness and promote understanding of all cancer types through education on symptoms and treatment options.
The goal for the event was to foster greater awareness within the organization about breast cancer and other cancers, specifically regarding early detection and treatment.
According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, more than 360,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024, however, advancements in early detection methods and treatment can increase the chances of survival. When caught in its earliest, localized stages, the 5-year relative survival rate of breast cancer is 99%.
