‘Edible Dublin’, feeding the city in a time of Climate Change

Dublin City Council would like to announce the launch of 'Edible Dublin', an initiative setting out how we feed a City in a time of climate change.

What will we eat in 2050? Imagining the future of food in the City has led us to look at the past and present for answers. Looking to the past, Dublin City's rich history is evident. Growing around the River Liffey and its tributaries, residents of the City flourished harvesting vegetables in the hinterlands, trading livestock at marts in the City, and bringing spices into the City at the port. The City's social and economic life was defined by food, and this influence can be seen in street and place names across the City.

Growing from Eat the Streets Festival, 'Edible Dublin' is a strategy which follows the principles of a just transition; enabling us to work towards a city where all residents of the City have equitable access to nutritious food for their health and well-being, now and in the future.

By nourishing a health food system, we are growing the roots for a climate resilient city, delivering on the actions set out in Climate Neutral Dublin 2030 and in Dublin's City Development Plan 2022-2028, ensuring our city transitions to a low carbon, sustainable, and climate resilient future. Further, Dublin City being a mission city in the EU Mission for 100 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities, Edible Dublin and Eat the Streets are vital parts of our journey to climate neutrality

"As the Lord Mayor, I am delighted that we have developed our food strategy, 'Edible Dublin'," saidThe Lord Mayor of Dublin, James Geoghegan. "It is a key action in our climate action plan Climate Neutral Dublin 2030. To be a resilient city, we need a resilient food system. Edible Dublin is the result of a community of people, coming together to share stories and knowledge all in the spirit of growing together. We know that it takes a community of individuals to inspire people to be part of change and feel that they are agents of change. We will nurture this community through Edible Dublin."

"We are delighted to invite people to be part of making Dublin's food system resilient in a time of climate change," said Derek Kelly, Executive Manager, Environment and Climate Change, Dublin City Council. "Edible Dublin grew out of Eat the Streets - which has been and is exploring how we feed a city in a time of climate change by asking people to join us in a journey of growing, cooking, creating and discovering. The food strategy aims to nurture this community to enable us to reach our climate neutrality targets."

Why Edible Dublin Matters

Through this strategy we aim to:1.Enable knowledge exchange between rural and urban areas, and between generations; 2. Work to improve food skills and knowledge, in addition to building a greater understanding amongst the public and businesses of food production, preparation, distribution and waste prevention; 3. Improve the health and wellbeing of the City's residents through better access. All of which will contribute to making the City and its residents resilient to climate change impacts on the food system.

To accomplish this, the strategy has developed four action areas:

  • Healthy Citizens, Healthy City
  • Growing Food Around Us
  • Cooking, Creating, Discovering
  • Farm to Fork and Back - Stopping Food Waste

'Edible Dublin' was launched last night at an event in the CHQ building.

"Urban brewing, a restaurant, bar and brewery in the CHQ building, were delighted to design and execute a three course vegetarian, globally inclusive menu for the event, with focus on creating dishes influenced and inspired by multiple cuisines around the world whist using locally sourced ingredients. Guests were also delighted to sample their newest brew, a Grisette style beer infused with Irish Honey, which was one of the many highlights on the night," said Leo E.Vasileiou Director of Urban Brewing.
