IFC Vice President for Africa, Sérgio Pimenta, Visiting South Africa

Johannesburg, South Africa, August 21, 2024 -- Sérgio Pimenta, IFC's Vice President for Africa, is visiting South Africa this week from August 21 to August 23 to highlight IFC's commitment to supporting private sector development and job creation in the country, including in the energy, municipal infrastructure, climate finance, agribusiness, and education sectors.

Accompanied by senior members of IFC's leadership team for Africa, Mr. Pimenta will meet with senior government officials to discuss South Africa's development priorities and public-private partnership opportunities. Specifically, Mr. Pimenta will engage with South Africa's Minister of Electricity and Energy, H.E. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa; Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, H.E. Parks Tau; Director-General of the Department of Water and Sanitation, Dr. Sean Phillips; and Head of Project Management at the Office of the Presidency, Mr. Rudi Dicks.

Mr. Pimenta will also meet with private sector and donor partners in South Africa to discuss how IFC can drive private-sector development while helping support national goals around job creation, climate change mitigation, building sustainable infrastructure, and broaden economic inclusion.

IFC's committed investment portfolio in South Africa currently stands at $3.7 billion across 49 clients--the largest in Africa. South Africa is IFC's fifth largest client globally. IFC's advisory portfolio in the country stands at US$25.1 million. In South Africa, IFC focuses on efforts to boost renewable energy, green-focused construction, financial inclusion, and South Africa's electricity offering.

Sérgio Pimenta

IFC Vice President for Africa

Sérgio Pimenta is IFC's Vice President for Africa. In this capacity, he is in charge of all advisory and investment operations in a region with a committed portfolio of $17 billion as of July 31, 2024, and almost 800 staff working to expand the private sector's role in addressing urgent development challenges in the financial, manufacturing, agribusiness and services, and infrastructure industries.

Previously, Mr. Pimenta was Director and Global Head of Industry-Manufacturing, Agribusiness, and Services at IFC, managing all operations in these sectors worldwide. Mr. Pimenta also served for three years as IFC's Regional Director responsible for East Asia and the Pacific, based in Hong Kong.

Earlier in his career at IFC, Mr. Pimenta held senior managerial positions in the manufacturing, agribusiness, and services sectors in the Asia Pacific region, the Middle East and North Africa, and Washington, DC.

Prior to joining the World Bank Group through its Young Professionals Program in 1996, Mr. Pimenta worked for the Treasury Department of the French Ministry of Finance, as well as for Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP).

A Portuguese and French national, Mr. Pimenta holds an engineering degree from the École Polytechnique, Paris, and a post-graduate degree from the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, Paris.
