About the New Citizen Campaign

Our democracy and communities are stronger when we have an inclusive and engaged citizenry. Immigrants who become U.S. citizens gain substantial rights and access to benefits, including protection from deportation, the right to vote and run for office, and ability to petition for family members to join them in the United States.

With these values in mind, OIRA's New Citizen Campaign (NCC) was created in 2016 to expand citizenship education, outreach, and services to the tens of thousands legal permanent residents (LPRs) in Seattle. Through a consortium of 11 local community-based organization, NCC provides free legal advice and citizenship application assistance to increase the number of immigrants and refugees who naturalize and become civically engaged. NCC offers our services through one-time, pro seservices, volunteer-supported large workshops run by OIRA, and smaller monthly clinics hosted by community partners. NCC and its partners are committed to empowering individuals on their path to citizenship, fostering inclusivity and strengthening communities.

In 2023, NCC assisted nearly 240community members on their path to U.S. citizenship, with clients from 34 different countries speaking over 14 languages.

Our NCC community partners that help organize and run this year's citizenship clinics include:

  • Asian Counseling & Referral Service
  • Afghan Health Initiative
  • Catholic Immigration Legal Services
  • Chinese Information Service Center
  • Entre Hermanos
  • Horn of Africa Services
