The University of Barcelona climbed seven places in the Best Global Universities (BGU) ranking, making it 79th in the world. It is also the 27th best European university and maintains its leading position in Spain.

The University of Barcelona climbed seven places in the Best Global Universities (BGU) ranking, making it 79th in the world. It is also the 27th best European university and maintains its leading position in Spain.

In Spain, the UB is followed by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (133rd place), the Universitat de València (251st), the Pompeu Fabra university (269th) and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (277th).

By areas of knowledge, the UB stands out extraordinarily well in gastroenterology and hepatology (4th position in the world) and has obtained notable positions in infectious diseases (16th position); surgery (29th); oncology (34th); psychiatry and psychology (36th); clinical medicine (37th); immunology (52nd); marine and freshwater biology (52nd); space sciences (53rd); pharmacology and toxicology (56th); neuroscience and behaviour (57th); cardiac and cardiovascular systems (68); public, environmental and occupational health (70); molecular biology and genetics (75); radiology, nuclear medicine and imaging medicine (79); plant and animal sciences (79); arts and humanities (81); and 100th position in agricultural sciences, cell biology and physics.

If we look at the different indicators in the ranking, the UB stands out especially in research reputation in its region (Europe), where it is ranked 19th; the number of research articles in the top 1% of most cited articles (ranked 61st worldwide); total citations (ranked 67th worldwide); scientific publications (ranked 77th); and the number of publications in the top 10% of most cited publications (ranked 79th).

The US institutions lead the new edition of Best Global Universities, led by Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, and the University of Oxford. The ranking is based on a set of indicators on international research reputation, regional reputation, scientific publications, citations, conferences and international collaboration, among others.
