Lenovo sponsors UST-Houston Esports: Elevates esports and academic excellence

The University of St. Thomas-Houston's vibrant Esports Programis being sponsored by Lenovo, a technology giant providing cutting-edge solutions for the gaming community and beyond. For the award-winning St. Thomas teams, it means more opportunities to travel, compete and represent the University nationwide.

UST Esports Coach Jonathan Baadsgaard said, "We're very excited that this Lenovo gift will enable us to travel to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and showcase our competitive edge in the upcoming and highly regarded annual HUE Fest collegiate esports tournament there.

Why a Global Tech Company Wanted to Work with UST esports

Lenovo client Manager for Higher Education Joseph Kenney explained that Sayan Tarafder at TanChes Global Management, a Texas-based IT solutions company, was the facilitator who started the conversation between UST and the tech giant. Kenney liked what he heard.

"I was excited by the success UST was having with its relatively small size," he recalled. "Their ambitions to grow the program further impressed me. Lenovo is committed to encouraging digital athletes, and we like to support smaller schools because the assistance is significant to them."

"As the world's largest PC company with a full-stack portfolio of devices, solutions, and services, the value Lenovo can bring to the UST campus doesn't stop at esports," Kenney added.

Strengthening UST Esports

The St. Thomas Valorant and League of Legends (LoL) teams have claimed second and third place in the nation with LoL in the top roster nationally. Coming up strong, the University's Overwatch team placed in the top five at OWCC 2023.

UST Esports is winning and growing and preparing its digital athletes to succeed in one of the fastest-growing industries in the world. Their preparation includes an emphasis on academic excellence.

Baadsgaard said, "Our esports program stands strong for its focus on competitive gaming and academic excellence. We cater to all aspects of student interest and hold a reputation as a top competitor across many game titles. At the same time, we're pioneering degrees and educational studies that focus on the many careers within the field. Specifically, we focus on the management, game design, and business of esports. We're proud to report that at UST, students can now earn a minor in esports."

Notably, many esports skills, such as strategic thinking, teamwork, and quick decision-making, are transferrable to other career paths.

More Corporate Sponsorship Opportunities

Baadsgaard is optimistic that the new corporate sponsorship will be fruitful and expand. He went on to say this motivated esports program, with its talented digital athletes, is always looking for visionary corporate sponsors like Lenovo to support unlocking a world of potential for these students.
