Inaugural Newmont Mapping our Future Student Forum in Darwin

Cathryn Tilmouth, Executive Director - MCA NT

17 September 2024

High school students from Darwin are getting a taste of new technologies like drones and remote sensing technologies to map, monitor and mine in the resources sector thanks to an initiative by the Minerals Council of Australia.

Over 60 high school students in years 10 to 12 from three public and private Darwin high schools will learn more about the exciting range of career opportunities that utilise some of the most sophisticated technology to develop mining projects in the Northern Territory.

Students will have the chance to participate in a hands-on drone coding and flying workshop, participate in a speed career session where they will meet with current resource sector professionals, visit the Chung Wah Society Chinese Museum to learn more about the Territory's proud mining history, and take part in an exploration challenge to get a glimpse of the future of mining and minerals that will play a part in reaching net zero future targets.

Students will leave the forum with an enhanced understanding of the Territory's resources industry, the importance of STEM education and may be inspired to pursue a future in this sector.

The mining industry is a major employer in remote and regional areas in the Northern Territory, generating thousands of secure and high-paying jobs.

'With a growing pipeline of resource projects that will utilise advanced technologies, it is important for industry and government to work together to build a local workforce and develop local skills to ensure all Territorians can take advantage of the opportunities that will accompany these projects. This is a shared responsibility for industry, government and educators,' said MCA executive director of Northern Australia, Cathryn Tilmouth.

'This forum is a fantastic opportunity for industry to directly engage with local students, showcasing what our sector has to offer while they are making important decisions about their future. The MCA looks forward to continuing to grow this forum in the future across the Northern Territory.'

Minister for Mining and Energy, Gerard Maley said 'The Newmont Mapping our Future Student Forum showcases career opportunities in the resource industry, providing Territory students with firsthand experience of the mining industry, fostering development of future employment opportunities for Territorians.'

Newmont's General Manager Tanami operations, Justin de Meillon said mining - especially in the Northern Territory - offered some of the most rewarding career paths available for young people in today's market.
