SIU’s Paul Simon Institute will host leading U.S. budget expert Oct. 10

CARBONDALE, Ill. - William Hoagland, senior vice president of the Bipartisan Policy Center, will join Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Paul Simon Public Policy Institute on Thursday, Oct. 10, for a virtual discussion about the fiscal predicament facing the United States.

Hoagland will join John Shaw, institute director, to discuss the causes and consequences of America's soaring budget deficits and surging national debt.

The discussion, via Zoom at 10 a.m., is free and open to the public, but registration to view the conversation is required. The discussion is part of the institute's "Understanding Our New World" discussion series. Visit paulsimoninstitute.org/events to register.

"No one in the United States has a better understanding of the history and complexity of federal budget policy than Bill Hoagland," Shaw said. "He was a major participant in some of the most important budget negotiations in the last half century. His mastery of both the broad scope and intricate details of federal budget policy is unmatched. We are eager to learn from Bill how the United States got into this fiscal mess and, especially, what the best way forward is to establish more balanced budget policies."

In addition to discussing economic policies, Hoagland will also touch on the upcoming presidential and congressional campaigns.

Before coming to the Bipartisan Policy Center, Hoagland worked for the federal government for more than 30 years, including 25 years as a U.S. Senate staff member. He served as the Republican staff director of the Senate Budget Committee and the director of budget and appropriations for then-Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tennessee.

Hoagland participated as a senior Senate staff member in highly consequential budget negotiations, including the 1985 Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Budget Deficit Reduction Act and the 1990 and the 1997 bipartisan budget agreements.

A native of Indiana, Hoagland attended the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and holds degrees from Purdue and Penn State. His family's farm in Indiana was recognized as a Hoosier Homestead for having remained in the family for more than a century.
