15 July 2022
Media Advisory
OR Tambo District in the Eastern Cape is one of the areas which were affected by heavy floods in April this year, which resulted in the destruction of property, displacement of families and negatively affected the food and nutritional security of the vulnerable communities in the short term by disrupting their livelihoods and sources of income. The Port St Johns Local Municipality was the worst affected area.
To assess recovery and rebuilding efforts in the area, the Minister of Social Development, Ms Lindiwe Zulu, will from 15-18 July 2022 embark on a service delivery oversight visit to DSD Portfolio projects and facilities. The visit forms part of the Department's activities for the Nelson Mandela Month under the theme; "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are."
The facilities that Minister will visit include the disability centre, older persons centre and the Criminal Assets Recovery Account (CARA)-funded project that renders services to survivors of gender-based violence.
On Monday, 18 July, Minister Zulu will attend the annual Nelson Mandela Memorial Lecture at the Walter Sisulu University with a group of students and learners who are social grants beneficiaries. This is to showcase the positive impact of social grants on educational outcomes of learners and students.
