Set Out Your Leaves & Yard Waste on Sunday, December 8 for a Last Chance Pickup

The Streets Division will be performing a last chance pickup for leaves and yard waste, weather permitting.

All residents who need another leaf pickup should set out their leaves and yard waste on Sunday, December 8, 2024.

Crews will be through all Madison neighborhoods one last time to collect leaves and yard waste sometime during the workdays following Sunday, December 8, weather permitting.

Every Madison neighbor shares the same last chance set out date. We will be in your neighborhood as soon as we can. Please be patient. It will take multiple workdays for every neighborhood to receive their last chance pickup.

Snow Response Takes Priority; Collection is Not Guaranteed

The same people collecting leaves are the same people who drive the snowplows for the City of Madison.

Snow response duties are more important than leaf pickup.

If we have a significant snowstorm, we may need to stop this last chance pickup early so we can focus personnel on snow response instead.

Expect More Leaves in the Street After Collection

Street sweepers typically trail behind leaf collection crews to gather debris left in the streets.

Temperatures are expected to be too cold to use street sweepers very often for the last chance pickup.

Sweepers require water to work. When temperatures are around 28 degrees, it can cause the water within these vehicles to freeze and cause damage. In order to keep the vehicles from breaking, they will not be used when temperatures are too cold.

Also, most of the Streets Division sweeper fleet will be sent out for their annual maintenance on Monday December 9, leaving only a limited number of sweepers available.

With very cold temperatures expected, and a limited number of sweepers at hand, it is likely you will see more leaf debris in the street than usual following pickup.

Drop-off Sites Accept Leaves; Their Hours Are Changing

Yard waste and leaves are accepted at the drop-off sites.

The drop-off sites are changing hours for the winter months.

The Olin Avenue location is closed for the winter.

The South Point Rd and Sycamore Avenue sites will soon begin their limited winter hours.

If you are going to use the drop-off sites, check the webpage before loading your vehicle to be sure you know what the hours are.

The drop-off site webpage is www.cityofmadison.com/DropOffSites.
