New early evening Lerwick to Sumburgh bus service

ZetTrans has announced today that a trial will begin this evening of a six-day per week 1900hrs departure from Lerwick to Sumburgh Airport.

The new bus service follows confirmation late on Friday afternoon of the service being registered with the Traffic Commissioner for Scotland.

The service trial is being put in place following a decision of the ZetTrans Board in May, having discussed requests for evening services to be investigated. The 1900hrs departure will bridge the gap between services departing Lerwick at 1715hrs and 2115hrs from Mondays to Thursdays, and 2300hrs on Fridays and Saturdays. It is hoped that the new service will be useful for people working past 1715hrs and attending activities in Lerwick in the early evening.

Chair of ZetTrans, Councillor Moraig Lyall, commented - "This bus heads down to Sumburgh already, to bring passengers north at 2000hrs. Making this into a passenger service will let us assess the uptake of a mid-evening bus. The 1910hrs to Scalloway is already well used and the passenger numbers on this new service will be monitored to measure its success. Folks now have more choice to use public transport rather than their cars in the early evening, as well as giving young people an option to travel home earlier than the current 2100hrs service."
