SPEARFISH, S.D. - The South Dakota Board of Regents announces the expansion of the Gateway Certificate Program, aimed at giving students an advantage in university-level academics and career exploration. This program is specifically designed for high school students taking dual credit courses, ensuring they engage in career-focused coursework while earning college credits. Having introduced the Gateway to Education certificate in August, the Board has now approved three new certificates to introduce students to career paths in agriculture, engineering, and business.
"The expansion of our certificate program highlights the public university system's dedication to equipping South Dakota students with the tools to excel in today's competitive job market," said Nathan Lukkes, BOR Executive Director. "By providing early access to university-level courses, we're fostering a pipeline of skilled professionals in agriculture, engineering, business, and education."
Gateway to Agriculture Certificate: South Dakota State University will offer the Gateway to Agriculture certificate, tailored for high school students interested in agriculture and related industries. This program introduces students to the Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources career cluster, covering topics such as production, processing, marketing, and developing agricultural commodities. Students will gain foundational knowledge to explore diverse career paths in agriculture, food systems, and natural resources.
Gateway to Engineering Certificate: In collaboration, South Dakota School Mines and South Dakota State University will offer the Gateway to Engineering certificate. This program provides students with a foundation in engineering-related general education courses and an introduction to the engineering profession. High school students with an aptitude for problem-solving and innovation will have the opportunity to explore the dynamic field of engineering while building skills essential for success in higher education.
Gateway to Business Certificate: A joint effort by Black Hills State University, Dakota State University, Northern State University, South Dakota State University, and the University of South Dakota, the Gateway to Business certificate is designed for students interested in business and entrepreneurship. Participants will gain foundational knowledge in business practices and communication while engaging in hands-on experiences that prepare them for future business endeavors.
These certificates allow high school students to earn college credit, reduce the time and cost of completing a degree, and explore potential career paths. South Dakota's Gateway Certificate Program expansion underscores the state's commitment to preparing students for future academic and professional success.
